42 questions available
Why start?
Why should my business measure carbon?
A baseline helps you answer customer questions, identify emissions hotspots and prioritise improvements. Start with the decision or request you need to support, then choose the reporting scope.
Can reporting help us keep customers and win tenders?
It can help you respond with organised evidence when a buyer requests emissions information or a reduction plan. Ask for the buyer’s exact format and criteria; a report does not guarantee a contract.
Why would a larger customer ask my SME for emissions data?
Your operations or products may contribute to its supply-chain footprint. Confirm whether it needs company emissions, product data, transport information or a supplier questionnaire.
Will measurement reduce our electricity bill?
Measurement alone does not save energy. It helps identify where to investigate; operational changes and suitable projects must then deliver the savings.
Do we need to wait until reporting is compulsory?
No. A focused baseline can support a current customer request or investment decision. Match the effort to your business needs and build better records over time.
Is a carbon report the same as a sustainability report?
No. A carbon inventory concerns greenhouse gases. A broader sustainability report may also address governance, risks, strategy, social matters and other disclosures.
Exports, CBAM & reporting requirements
What is CBAM and why might it matter to us?
The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism addresses embedded emissions in selected imported goods. Its definitive regime began on 1 January 2026. An affected overseas producer may need to supply emissions information to its EU customer. European Commission CBAM guidance ↗
Does CBAM apply to every Malaysian exporter?
No. Current coverage concerns selected goods in cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen. Check the product’s customs code, destination and applicable rules with the importer. European Commission CBAM guidance ↗
Can an ordinary company carbon report fulfil CBAM requirements?
Do not assume so. CBAM has specific embedded-emissions calculation and reporting rules. Confirm the required production-process data and methodology before commissioning a report. European Commission CBAM guidance ↗
Does CarbonScan automatically submit a CBAM declaration?
This website does not promise CBAM filing or a validated CBAM calculation module. Confirm platform functionality and specialist reporting requirements before relying on it for a submission.
How can we begin preparing for an EU customer’s request?
Ask for the covered product codes, reporting period, required template and calculation rules. Identify the responsible production and data teams, then assess gaps before promising a compliant deliverable.
Must every Malaysian SME report under the NSRF?
Do not assume universal applicability. Malaysia’s NSRF introduces IFRS S1 and S2 through phased implementation. Check your entity’s applicable requirements and reliefs using the current official guidance. SC Malaysia NSRF guidance ↗
Will a GHG inventory satisfy all IFRS S2 requirements?
No. Emissions information is only part of climate-related disclosure. Governance, strategy, risk management and other required information also need to be considered. SC Malaysia NSRF guidance ↗
Can VR1 guarantee acceptance by a regulator or bank?
No. The recipient determines its requirements. Agree the intended use, reporting criteria, evidence and any assurance requirement before preparing the deliverable.
Carbon data & evidence
What are Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3?
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 covers purchased energy such as electricity. Scope 3 covers other relevant value-chain emissions, including purchases, transport and waste.
What documents should we start with?
Bring the reporting period, sites and ownership details, electricity bills, fuel records and available purchasing, freight, waste and travel records. The final list depends on the agreed boundary.
Must we calculate every Scope 3 category?
Screen all relevant categories and record why each is included or excluded under the selected reporting criteria. A missing figure is a data gap, not evidence of zero emissions.
What if some invoices or activity data are missing?
Create a gap register. Where the reporting method permits estimation, document the basis, uncertainty and plan to replace estimates with better evidence.
What is an emission factor?
It converts an activity amount, such as litres of fuel, into emissions. Its unit, geography, year, technology and calculation boundary need to fit the activity.
What if CarbonScan does not contain the factor we need?
Confirm the available workflow with the platform team. A suitable published factor needs source and methodology review before use; do not invent a value or treat an AI suggestion as approved evidence.
Can AI replace invoices and verification?
No. AI may assist with organising information, but responsible reviewers must check source records, assumptions, factors and calculations. Retain evidence for each material input.
What is the difference between a company and product footprint?
A company inventory covers activities within its reporting boundary and period. A product footprint follows a defined product system and lifecycle boundary; one is not automatically interchangeable with the other.
How often should we update our information?
Use the reporting frequency required by your customer or chosen framework. Monthly records can make an annual inventory and ongoing performance review easier.
Reduction & net-zero planning
Where should reductions begin?
Use the baseline to identify major sources, then compare practical actions for impact, cost and feasibility. Assign an owner and a way to measure the result.
Which practical actions could we consider?
Review equipment schedules, cooling controls, compressed-air leaks, lighting, efficient machinery, solar suitability, waste prevention, packaging and transport. Select actions that fit the site.
Should we install solar before improving efficiency?
Evaluate both together. Reducing avoidable demand can change the appropriate system size and project economics. Review the load profile, roof, electrical constraints and operating arrangements.
How does an energy-management system help?
Suitable metering can reveal when and where consumption occurs. Savings require staff to respond to the information; automatic CarbonScan integration must be confirmed separately.
How do we know a project has actually saved energy?
Agree a baseline and measurement plan before implementation. Compare results while considering changes in production, operating hours, weather and other relevant conditions.
Can emissions rise even if we become more efficient?
Yes. Higher output can increase total emissions while emissions per unit fall. Track both absolute emissions and a relevant intensity measure so the explanation is clear.
Does buying offsets make our business net zero?
Do not make that conclusion from a purchase alone. Prioritise reductions and assess any claim against its defined scope, credible criteria and evidence, including treatment of remaining emissions.
Does a CarbonScan report certify ISO compliance or net zero?
No. Software output alone is not certification, independent verification or proof of net-zero status. Any conformity or assurance claim requires a defined process and supporting evidence.
Projects, funding & getting help
Can carbon information support a financing application?
It can form part of a project case alongside technical feasibility, costs, cash flow, expected savings and delivery risks. Ask the lender for its own eligibility and evidence requirements.
Does VR1 provide loans or guarantee grants?
No. VR1 supports project readiness and agreed facilitation. Independent institutions decide eligibility, financing, grants and approval.
What should a green project brief contain?
Describe the baseline problem, proposed solution, technical assumptions, investment and recurring costs, expected outcomes, delivery responsibilities and monitoring plan.
What does VR1 do as a one-stop centre?
VR1 connects assessment, CarbonScan support, solution evaluation, project preparation, provider coordination and performance review under an agreed scope.
Does VR1 install every technology?
Specialist providers perform their contracted technical work. Agree design, installation, safety, warranties and maintenance responsibilities with the relevant provider.
Can our staff learn to manage carbon data themselves?
Training can help staff understand records and reporting responsibilities. Explore CarbonScan Academy ↗ and confirm the course content and prerequisites.
Where can existing users open CarbonScan?
Use the CarbonScan app ↗. Access and available functions depend on your account.
How much does an assessment cost?
Fees depend on sites, reporting scope, records and complexity. Request a scoped proposal with deliverables and responsibilities before work starts.
How can technology providers join?
Introduce capabilities through the partner enquiry form. An enquiry does not guarantee approval or project leads.
Does the website form send my details automatically?
No. It prepares an email or WhatsApp message for you to review and send. It does not automatically create an account or submit to a website database.
